  • A Letter to Barneys From a Costume Designer Stuck in Canada
--Guest Post By Sophie de Rakoff Dear Barneys,I missed you. It was a little chilly up here in Vancouver, by the time we finished shooting This Means War it was December and it was cold. Even though I was born and raised in London, nearly two decades of California living has thinned my blood. And although my cashmere Marc Jacobs beanie was soft and brought out the green of my eyes, I wanted to burn it by the end of the shoot. And my Marni rainboots that turned from white to black with mud and drudge, I left them on the wardrobe truck, and didn't even look back. But really, more than anything, I just really, really missed YOU Barneys. Your absence was a hole that could not be fulfilled. Your memory was a like a third person that hung in the air between my assistant and I. And now, with hindsight, I just want to say: I am sorry my friend, I took you for granted. I stopped appreciating how chock full of fashion goodness you are, and the smorgasbord of delight that you offer. I stopped appreciating that you have the a little bit of everything and a lot of some really good stuff. That you are an equal opportunity store, and favor the gents as much as the ladies. No gender bias for you Barneys. Reese Witherspoon in This Means WarI also forgot to thank you for having such a perfect selection of shoes. If I needed it, you had it. But did I ever stop and thank you? Did I ever kiss you gently and say "Barneys, you are the one for me"? Nope, I never did, and for that I am truly sorry. It's not that I hate you Canada, you are a lovely country full of very nice people. But in terms of wardrobe, a plethora of grey turtlenecks and some wooly knits do not a good looking movie make. For our movie we needed color, sex appeal, range and vivacity. And Canada, you were not the gal for this job. Barneys, you however were born to wave that flag, and before I left town you and I were hand in hand. Then I crossed the border, crossed to the dark side and it was a sad day. I cried a river of tears over your absence Barneys. I had to send people over the border just to find a pair of decent sandals. I had to put Net-a-Porter into overdrive just to get a taste of Tucker, a red dress, and a Stella bag. But of course it was Canadian Net-a-Porter and it took 6 days to get anything. Which was almost as crazy as having to make an assistant drive to Seattle to get a pair of sandals. I mean really people? Sandals? Seattle? Reese Witherspoon in This Means WarAll I wanted to do, Barneys, was get in my car, fall into your welcoming arms, gorge myself on your treats, and work a happy 12 hour day instead of a frustrating 18 hour one. Barneys, you make my job easy and the actors happy. And if by chance you don't have what I need in my LA store, you betcha your big sister in New York has it all. And can send it overnight. That is a thing of great beauty Barneys, as are you. So once again Barneys let me say I respect you, I salute you and I will never, ever again take you for granted.Your pal,Sophie de Rakoff._______London-born, LA-based Sophie de Rakoff is a costume designer for major feature films. • How To Winterize Your Beauty Routine.
Hope you had a lovely weekend! Cold winter weather can have damaging and negative effects on skin, making it important to winterize your regular beauty routine to avoid dry, chapped, flaky skin. Author, blogger and “DIY” beauty expert Erika Katz (author of Bonding Over Beauty -more information on Erika below) would like to share with you her favorite beauty tips for gorgeous winter weather skin. Here they are, below! Exfoliate skin once per week with an exfoliating sugar scrub. Click here to see how to make it. For dry hands, rub a rich moisturizer all over (Erika recommends Shea Butter creams) then wrap your hands in a warm wet wash cloth. The heat will help hands retain the moisture. You can also wear gloves. This is great when you are watching TV. Before bed, use a rich night cream with an oil base. In the winter we need creams with oil not water. Water freezes on the skin and does not give it the proper moisture. Each day after the shower before skin is dry, rub baby oil all over your body to seal in moisture. For feet, rub moisturizer on dry feet, then put on warm sock. You can warm your socks in the dryer or microwave. For chapped lips, brush lips with a toothbrush to remove dead skin. Then, rub lips with vitamin e oil. If you have A&D ointment left over from the baby, which is actually great for chapped lips too.

  • TMI Tuesday: My weight and my insecurities
Ugh. Calories annoy me. Seriously. Why do they have to be in EVERYTHING? Calories should really only be in things that I can’t stand. Like pickles and olives. Yes, I’m beginning a post complaining. My bad, y’all. But what can I say? Talking about my weight kinda makes me sad. Because here’s the truth…. I will always be “watching my weight.” Yep. I am a beauty blogger and I am not ashamed to admit that I have my share of insecurities. And most of them deal with my weight. I’ve been watching my weight for as long as I can remember. It comes in spurts. I’ll go months with being obsessed with working out and eating. Something will happen and the next thing I know, I’ve gained all of the weight I lost. It’s a tiresome cycle. But it’s one that I will be dealing with for the rest of my life. And it’s not for the shallow reasons like wanting to fit into a bikini (pshht, never happening) or trying to look “good” for someone. My health will always be an issue for me because I’ve got to keep a close eyes on myreoccurringhigh blood pressure. It’s stressful, y’all. Most of last year was my “down” year. I worked out a bit but not as much as I should have. I would go weeks between running or heading to the gym. I’d tell myself that I was too busy or too tired. And because of that, I gained a whooping 20 lbs. My size 12′s got tight and I was forced into a 14. I would see a developing double chin in the mirror and that alone prevented me from doing as many YouTube videos as I should have been doing. Self-loathing ensued; an emotion that I always deal with when I notice myself gaining weight. In the Fall of last year, I got serious about my weight loss again and so I’ve been actively going to the gym (3-6 times a week) and doing what I have to do to get back in those 12′s. I’m getting there. And I have to remember that I am human. We all backslide from time to time and I can’t always fall into these depressive slumps when I realize that I’ve gained a pound here or there. Keeping an eye on my weight is a lifestyle for me. I can’t just eat a breadstick without knowing that I’ll HAVE to work out the next day. Yes, I’ll eat my favorite ginger snaps, but never in peace. For I know that unless I work those cookies off, the pounds will pile up. This is my life. This is the way it has to be. I’ll never be skinny. And I’m okay with that. I don’t mind that my thighs rub together or that my DD’s require my having to wear TWO bras when I work out. I don’t hate my body. But do I want to be in optimal health so that I can be around to keep bringin’ y’all mascara reviews in 2045? Hells yah. I know weight is a sensitive topic for most of us women. Some of us want smaller boobs. Others want bigger boobs. Some say they’re too skinny. Others long to be skinny. Mommas feel some kind of way about their post-pregnancy bodies and many of us fall victim to the lies society tells us. Is it important to be healthy? Absolutely. But do you have to be a size 2, 4 or 6 to be healthy and beautiful. Absolutely not. What say you? Are you happy with you weight? Or will it always be a struggle for you too?
  • Top Pick: Rachel Zoe Bardot Platform Sandals
I've always had a bit of a soft spot for rich yellows, and Kim's recent post on yellow's big role in Spring 2012 definitely has me window shopping for some new yellow pieces. This new shoe find instantly popped out as a great way to incorporate the hue into Spring ensembles. The new Rachel Zoe Bardot Platform Sandal is a leather sandal with ankle strap perched on top of a 1.75" woven detail platform. The heel height is a lofty 5.5", which would be nicely offset by the substantial platform. And, can I say, I'm so glad that the Rachel Zoe label got through those initial stumbles in the accessory department. The shoes in the debut collection were horrible, but have steadily improved since then, reaching a new high for Spring 2012. This stylish sandal is a perfect example of the smart new direction the label is taking. So, where to wear this lovely shoe? For casual occasions, I like this sandal paired with cropped jeans of either the skinny or boyfriend variety -- both excellent options for showing off a standout shoe. This gorgeous shoe is also ideal for pairing with dressier items. The color will go nicely with many of Spring's super hot florals, and will also create a cool color block effect (yes, still popular for Spring) when matched up with a solid dress. Try coordinating this pretty mustard with grey, brown, deep blue or even a tomato red. → Buy the Rachel Zoe Bardot Platform Sandal, $325.00, at shopbop.com; shipping and returns are free. • Target Exec Laysha Ward Talks Diversity
Anyone who knows me knows that Target is by far my favorite store. The fact that I visit the superstore at least 4 times a week speaks volumes about obsession.Granted, I frequent the store to stock up on coveted fashions from Missoni to Jason Wu, and other essentials, but also because the "bullseye" gives back extensively. Plus, it seems to understand the importance and power of diversity, which so many other companies still struggle with despite the tapestry of America. Laysha Ward, President, Community Relations and Target Foundation, reading with a young girl. Photo Courtesy of TargetThat said, in honor of Black History Month, Laysha Ward, the President, Community Relations and Target Foundation (who happens to be a BG), spoke in a recent interview with Target's online magazine about community, who inspires her, and more.Check out a snippet of the interview:What does Black History Month mean to you?Laysha Ward: I celebrate the rich tapestry and melting pot that represents the foundation of the United States 365 days out of the year. But I love how Black History Month opens up the conversation on progress weve made in helping people of all backgrounds succeed and the reality of how far we have to go. How does Target inspire an inclusive community?LW: The most important thing any company can do is to listen, and I think that is something we are doing very well right now. We are listening to team members from every background, culture and preference. We are asking what it feels like to work at Target all the good and all the challenges. And were using that information to drive decisions about how to make this a more inclusive place to work and a stronger company all around. To read the rest of the interview click here. How often do you shop at Target?Subscribe in a reader
  • Beautiful Beginnings with Bobbi Brown
Beautiful Beginnings with Bobbi Brown What was the first Bobbi Brownproduct you ever tried? Did it pave way for a real romance or did it put you off the brand entirely? What was the first Bobbi Brown product you purchased? Did you love it? Hate it? Still own it? my answer: I had never tried Bobbi Brown prior to blogging, but Bobbi Brown was one of the earlier brands that worked with Temptalia, back when I didn’t even know that blogs were important. When our relationship started, we were in time to see what Bobbi had on the radar for Holiday ’07. The first product I remember trying was Everything mascara, which is a really natural mascara overall. It’s something I still recommend to readers looking for a little oomph but nothing dramatic. Share your first time experiences with Bobbi Brown in the comments!
  • Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti Fall 2012: Backstage Beauty
MAC key makeup artist Lucia Pieroni drew inspiration from the role Uma Thurman played as the lab technician  in the 1997 movie Gattica (if you haven't seen it check it out - it stars Jude Law as well). Uma played a sort of uptight yet beautiful and sexy woman which mirrors the inspiration for this makeup look.   Mineralize Skinfinish and Mineralize Skin Concealer was applied to the face and under the eyes. Brows were naturally filled in, lip glass was used as a wash over the lids. Gloss was applied on cheeks as a "hilite lipglass" according to Lucia and lips were covered with French Nougat (available Fall 2012). • Trend-Setting Styles from 90s' Movie Sets
With the 84th annual Academy Awards airing this Sunday, I thought it would be fun to look back at some of our favorite old-school movies featuring BGs that made an impact on our style. From Halle Berrys short and sassy do in  Strictly Business to Janet Jacksons box braids in Poetic Justice to Nia Longs lovely deep plum lip color in Love Jones, many BGs across the country went to great lengths to mimic these trailblazing beauty and hair trends from 90s' movies.Take a trip down movie memory lane: Halle Berry's role, in 1991's Strictly Business stole the show with her short hairstyle that sent thousands of BGs to salons throughout the country requesting the coveted cut.  Boomerang showed us brown girls and guys in a refreshing professional light back in 1992, but Robin Givens' long and flowing weave gave hair mavens a new muse to emulate.  Miss Janet Jackson, the ever-changing style chameleon, brought box-braids to the big screen with her film debut, Poetic Justice in 1993.We all fell in love with 1995's Love Jones, but Nia Long's sleek wrap do' and daring dark lips also caught our attention. Did I miss any movies from the 90s or 2000s that set hair or beauty trends for us BGs? If so, tell me in the comments. Out of these movies mentioned, which was your favorite?Subscribe in a reader
  • Nanette Lepore Fall 2012: Backstage Beauty
Australian fashion model Shanina Shaik Since I am such a big fan of Nanette Lepore's designs I was excited to get the opportunity to visit the backstage to view the makeup looks.  MAC key makeup artist James Kaliaidos said of the inspiration, "It was as if Oscar Wilde had a disco party." Kaliaidos must have had disco on his mind because while interviewing he started to sing his rendition of Madonna's "Borderline. It was great so see some humor backstage. MAC 'Matchmaster' Foundation SPF 15 was applied to the skin along with MAC 'Prep + Prime' Transparent Finishing Powder . On the eyes a creamy plum: MAC 'Powerpoint' Eye Pencil in Bordeauxline and Dark Currant (from the fall trend eye palette). Mineralize Skinfinish in Center of the Universe was used on the cheeks.  MAC Gloss Texture in Reflects Bronze was used for on the lips. I think the purple to looks beautiful on model Ajak's skin tone. Tyson came out to support friends and girlfriend Shanina Shaik backstage. Nanette Lepore Fall 2012 final look. • Bobbi Brown Miami Coral Rich Lip Color Review, Photos, Swatches
Bobbi Brown Miami Coral Rich Lip Color Bobbi Brown Miami Coral Rich Lip Color Bobbi Brown Miami Coral Rich Lip Color ($23.00 for 0.13 oz.) is described as a “nectar.” It looks surprisingly orange in the tube, and even still when swatched (but to a lesser degree), but it’s much pinker on the lips. I actually went back and swatched this just prior to writing out the review, because I was like, “What? This doesn’t look right!” It’s more like a pink coral with warm, yellow undertones once applied. MAC Flamingo is less opaque, less creamy-looking and a touch darker. Chanel Flirt is similar but a little less pale. MAC Blossom Culture is several shades pinker. MAC Ever Hip is similar but a touch less pink. Bobbi Brown’s Rich Lip Color formula is touted as long-wearing, moisturizing, and have “pure, crisp color.” When it first came out, I was pleasantly surprised; it’s a creamy yet lightweight lipstick that glides on easily and delivers opaque color coverage with very little product. It’s also hydrating enough that lips don’t feel dry after four to eight hours of wear. Not all shades wear the same, as lighter shades tend to fade away after four hours or so, while more intense shades (like a red) can wear six hours or longer. Miami Coralmanaged to make it four hours when I trialed it. Where to Buy: Bobbi Brown, $23. THE GLOSSOVER PRODUCT : 10/10 PIGMENTATION : 10/10 TEXTURE : 10/10 LONGEVITY : 8.5/10 APPLICATION : 5/5 PACKAGING : 4/5 FINAL THOUGHTS Miami Coral is a great shade for both spring and summer--it will be an awesome transitional shade, too. • Nails of the Week: OPI Warm and Fozzie and China Glaze Medallion
Like a toasty cup of cocoa, this manicure really warms up the color of my hands. Ive been meaning to show you this manicure for a while now, but it seems especially appropriate now. As Ive mentioned before, Im head over heels for the pastels that are being featured by every brand. However, I prefer to ground these sugary sweet looks with a sophisticated, rich nail color. Enter OPI Nail Lacquer in Warm and Fozzie ($8.50 US). A chocolately metallic bronze that flashes pink and green duochrome, this color works surprisingly well with outfits consisting of mint green and fluffy cream pieces. The beautiful metallic foiled finish helps Warm and Fozzie shine in the light, but also contributes towards its smooth pigmentation. Im wearing two coats above. Im not a huge fan of accent nails, but spontaneously I decided to layer a coat of China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Medallion ($3.50 US) on my thumbnail just to see what would happen. And what do you know, magic! This meant-to-be-layered lacquer is a sheer golden glitter with holographic silver particles. The overall effect is more subtle than it appears in the bottle, but the yellow-gold tones really complement Warm and Fozzie. What nail colors are you wearing with pastel hues?
